Where did Wheatgrass come from ?

In different forms, wheat has been used for thousands of years for it's nutrients and healing properties. In 1958, Dr Ann Wigmore did extensive research in to Wheatgrass, and since then, many claims have been made about it curing people of cancer etc. I believe their are web sites dedicated to Dr Wigmore's work, and the many testimonials made, you just need to browse for them.

Are Wheatgrass and Green Barley new supplements ?

Dehydrated cereal grass has been a popular food supplement since the 1930's. Before synthetic vitamin supplements were available people took cereal grass tablets. Doctors gave cereal grass tablets to patients with nutrient deficiencies or for specific conditions.

Are there specific nutrients Wheatgrass or Green Barley are rich in ?

Yes. Wheatgrass/Green Barley are a concentrated source of many nutrients, especially beta-carotene, calcium, iron, vitamin K, protein, vitamin C, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin B6 and other trace nutrients.

How is chlorophyll in Wheatgrass or Green Barley good for the blood ?

In the early 1920's, the similarity between haemoglobin and chlorophyll was demonstrated. Haemoglobin is the substance in the blood which is responsible for carrying oxygen. Many of the components, which build and sustain the essential elements in the blood, are also found in foods high in chlorophyll. A relationship exists between the process of respiration in humans and animals, and the process of photosynthesis in plants. The Wheatgrass/Green Barley absorbs and synthesises the nutrients vitamin K, vitamin C, folic acid, vitamin B6, iron, calcium and protein, all of which are vital to the generation and utilization of haemoglobin in humans.

In what other ways is chlorophyll beneficial to us ?

Scientists have found chlorophyll to be effective in detoxification, deodorising and in healing of wounds. In the 1950's many products were available using chlorophyll as a deodorising agent - toilet paper, nappies, chewing gum and shoe liners. In 1980, Dr Lai at the University of Texas Medical Centre, found extracts of Wheatgrass and green vegetables inhibited the effects of two carcinogens. He noted that the more chlorophyll in the vegetables the greater the protection. Spector and Calloway in 1959 demonstrated that green vegetables provide protection from radiation damage in test animals. Chlorophyll limits the growth of germs by providing an environment which interferes with their growth. Chlorophyll heals wounds by stimulating the repair of damaged tissues by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Chlorophyll decreases swelling, has been shown to be effective in healing peptic ulcers and promoting bowel regularity.

How do I take Wheatgrass or Green Barley ?

These green grasses are very fibrous, you can't eat them straight off unless you're a cow. It is best to take them on an empty stomach perhaps half an hour before you eat or two hours after you eat. The three main ways to take them are :
  1. Powder Form - 1 to 2 teaspoons a day mixed in juice or water (cold or slightly warm)or sprinkled on your cereal.
  2. Fresh Juice - use a juicer to extract the juice from the grass. You would need to use a masticating juicer rather than a centrifugal type to squeeze the juice out instead of tearing it to shreds.
  3. Tablets - in tablet form you generally need to take 8 + tablets a day . So for anybody who has problems swallowing tablets, this probably isn't the best way to consume it.
How much Wheatgrass or Green Barley should I take a day ?

I would say 1 to 2 teaspoons a day, but start with 1 teaspoon and work up gradually and see what suits you best. If you have too much too soon, you may start to have detoxification symptoms ie headaches and nausea etc. If that occurs simply reduce your intake for a couple of days then increase slowly. Some people take 6 or more teaspoons a day, so it really is down to what you feel comfortable with.

Which is better, Wheatgrass or Green Barley ?

Both have similar nutrient values, so other factors come in to play like the quality of the ground they have been grown in and other conditions which effect the growing process. I've found Wheatgrass to be less bitter than Green Barley, and perhaps Green Barley is a slightly darker compound.

Do I need to eat Wheatgrass or Green Barley every Day ?

No you don't need to eat them every day. Most people who recognise the nutritional value of these green foods do eat them on a daily basis. This choice to eat wheatgrass/green barley is no different from the choice to eat fruit and vegetables every day for good health.

Could Wheatgrass or Green Barley help me with my dieting ?

Almost certainly YES. Blood circulation is increased, so too is the body's metabolism which results in the body burning off excess fat.

I eat lots of fruit and vegetables, should I have Wheatgrass or Green Barley too ?

Unfortunately, commercially produced fruit and vegetables are grown using pesticides, fungicides, insecticides and artificial fertilisers. The soil they are grown in are often mineral deficient.

Is Wheatgrass safe to take if I have a wheat allergy ?

Wheatgrass is harvested at the jointing stage before it turns into a grain. It is extremely rare for people with wheat allergies to react to the cereal in its grass stage.

Is Wheatgrass safe for Children and Babies ?

It is safe for children to take wheat grass powder, use Young's Rule to work out the dosage. It is safe for babies to receive wheat grass from the mother via the breast milk.

Young's Rule: Age of child x Adult dose

......................................... ..Age of child + 12

(That's: Child's age in years times adult dose divided by child's age plus 12)
